Some people hear the word "lye" and automatically think of Granny's Lye Soap.  Fortunately, this stereotype in not true!  Natural, homemade soap is gentle enough for anyone to use.  As for the lye, "no lye means no soap."  It is an essential ingredient in soap making.

We now make three types of soap.  Our basic soap is made with olive oil, water, lye, and lemon juice.  Nothing else!  No additives, no detergents, and no phosphates.  It is very gentle and will not aggravate sensitive skin. You can bathe at the cottage, the sea, (or the encampment) and not harm the environment.

Our handmilled soaps are made with olive oil, water, lye, and naturally derived scents such as orange, anise, and balsam essential oil.  We also add mint leaves, cinnamon, oats, milk, honey, and ground rosemary depending on the recipe.  They smell wonderful - not overpowering and "perfumey."  All our soap is handmade!

This is for the re-enactment people especially!  Hovey's "Soldier Soap"!  Made with nothing but lard (yup, pig fat!), water, and lye and cooked up until it turns to gel.  Once it's cooled, it looks like white marble and cleans like no-one's business.  Approved by the Board of Ordnance (sort of..) and labelled BO.  Redcoats can purchase a bar for $3.00
